Hope in the Midst of Hardship: How the Butterfly Foundation Helped Our Family Breathe Again
Life changed overnight when our 6-year-old son, Nilav, was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia. One day, he was our happy, energetic little boy who loved dinosaurs, dragons, and playground adventures—and the next, we were sitting in a hospital room trying to process words no parent ever wants to hear: “Your child has cancer.”
The days that followed were filled with tears, disbelief, and fear. Nilav spent 16 days in the hospital after his diagnosis and continues to undergo chemotherapy and frequent treatments. He’s shown incredible bravery through countless medical procedures, even when scared or in pain.
Before his illness, Nilav was a cheerful kindergartener who loved learning and dreamed of becoming a firefighter. This journey has tested us in every way. My wife had to stop working to care for Nilav and our younger son, while I try to balance work, hospital visits, and family life. The financial strain of living on one income, with ongoing medical bills and high monthly expenses, often felt overwhelming.
That’s when The Butterfly Foundation came into our lives. Their generous support—paid our mortgage—lifted an enormous weight off our shoulders. In addition we received heartwarming support from their staff when it mattered most. They gave us something priceless: the ability to focus entirely on Nilav’s healing without the constant fear of losing our home.
Today, we hold onto hope. Every smile from Nilav, every small step forward, is a reminder of how strong love and community can be. We are deeply grateful for The Butterfly Foundation and for everyone who has stood beside us during this difficult time. Your kindness has given us light in our darkest moments. From the bottom of our hearts—thank you, Dev and family.
